Planning - Dov'è Tom? A Tour of Southern Italy - CycleBlaze

Planning

This is my fourth tour of Italy. I used my third tour as a starting point with a departure from Rome headed east to the Abruzzi. Our first three days will retrace those steps via Tivoli, Avezzano, and Sulmona before we turn south and make for Benevento and Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. From there we plan a leisurely ride back up the coast to Rome, visiting Sorrento, Pompei, Naples, and Anzio.

As on my previous tour, I mostly used Ride with GPS (RWGPS) to plan and map our route. RWGPS uses Google Maps as its underlying platform, and I would often revert to that site to lay out an identical route and view road and street conditions. There are many tunnels in this part of Italy, and we wanted a good understanding of what we were getting into before tackling any of them.

We are both using Garmin Edge 1000s loaded with Open Street Maps (OSM) for Italy. DC Rainmaker has a great tutorial on this should you ever need to upgrade or replace the standard map set that comes with your Garmin. The maps are free, highly detailed, and more colorful than the Garmin-issued maps. Hopefully this will not be a major distraction!

So here is the proposed route:
