Day 17: Doylestown to Orwell

Yellowblazing

This morning, Kevin made me a yummy spicy sausage omelette. We got suited up, and he gave me a ride to Akron. He ended up telling me a story about how on the Appalachian Trail, people that were strict about hiking every inch of the trail were white blazers. Those that would take easier sections to avoid the main difficult parts of the trail were blue blazers. And finally, the ones that accepted rides to skip portions were yellow blazers. I guess that makes me a yellow blazer!

All of our bikes ready to go

It was nice to hear him and his wife talk about the town and college that they attended years ago. Unfortunately, we would eventually split up as they had planned a different ride to do together as I pedaled North. I stayed on the Ohio to Erie for a ways before I eventually split off and went East towards Warren.

I got a quick lunch in Kent (presentation better than taste in this case)

I didn’t realize it, but once I got out of Warren, I was back on trail again! Apparently the paved trail continues all the way to Ashtabula. I heard from some other cyclists that it’s a fairly popular route. I ended up stopping in Orwell. I wasn’t able to find any campgrounds that allowed tents, but a phone call to a local church scored me a spot in their yard! That will have to do! I grabbed a milkshake and some chicken tenders at Dairy Queen and pitched my tent. Bedtime after a 70 mile day! Tomorrow is officially going to be the day I see Lake Erie, meaning I’ve ridden from the Great Plains to the Great Lakes! Huge milestone, but I’m keeping my eyes on the prize!

Today's ride: 70 miles (113 km)
Total: 968 miles (1,558 km)
