Day 3: The Exodus and Strawberries
“So you wanna go back to Egypt
Where it's warm and secure
Are you sorry you bought the one way ticket
When you thought you were sure
You wanted to live in the land of promise
But now it's getting so hard
Are you sorry you're out here in the desert
Instead of your own back yard“- Keith Green
Keith made this song popular back in my college days. It rang through my head all day. It recalls the descendants of Jacob as they fled Egypt. Because of fear and unbelief, the wandered through the wilderness for forty years.
Like Moses, my friends Bryan and Cindi parted the waters and led us through the Red Sea. Now, on our own we travelled back home. Yesterday I mentioned how excited I was to leave the 101 and its traffic. This morning started out serene riding a quiet road through pastoral farm fields. But soon we were on Hwy 22. No shoulders, winding hidden turns, and lots of traffic. Big trucks, fast cars, trailers. The weekend traffic had started. It was nerve wracking. My anxiety soared further not knowing where we would sleep tonight.
Additionally, there were no services for most of the way. No gas stations, no campgrounds, no Dollar Generals, no porta potties and no manna. Several times I was tempted to call Moses (Bryan) and come pick us up. I wanted to go back to Egypt. I had forgotten how Jesus had already provided for us; safety on other busy roads, safe camping, food and drink better than any manna. And surely as He protected us from the traffic, a Warm Showers host responded to our request and we had an oasis for the evening. And just when we were getting hangry and bonkish, a fruit stand appeared. Those were the best, sweetest and juicy strawberries I have ever eaten.
An hour later, as if guided by a standing fire, we were greeted by Curt and Barbara our hosts for the night. We were welcomed with cold ice tea and lemonade, fresh cookies and conversation. So much in common. Both are retired educators. Barbara quilts and has a sewing room that is well, big. Both are pilots and Curt has three home built airplanes; a Kit Fox, RV12 and the beginnings of Cam Am. I always wanted a Kit Fox! Many stories were shared of past flying experiences. I miss my Cessna 170.
I’m filled up again with food and joy. I wonder if I were at the foot of Mt Sinai if I would have been a Joshua who stood along side Moses or an Aaron who caved to the pressure of fear and unbelief and built the golden cow.
Tomorrow we continue our journey towards home
“Well there's nothing do but travel. And we sure travel a lot. ‘Cause it's hard to keep your feet from moving. When the sand gets so hot. And in the morning it's manna hotcakes. We snack on manna all day. And we sure had a winner last night for dinner Flaming manna souffle”
