Barry has been having a terrible time with his left pedal and cleat. His foot kept slipping out of the pedal. This can very dangerous. We stopped at this great little bike shop in Bruges called Steershop Bikes. The owner, Ben showed us his last pair of SPD pedals, so we decided to buy a new set of pedals. Barry has been using Speedplay Frog pedals and cleats on this trip. It gives him up to 20 degrees of float. However, just like the last time he used Speedplay Frog pedals on a trip, the cleats started to wear out after 1000 km. The cleats are too soft to stand up to walking on for an extended time. We bought a German pair of SPD pedals that are flat on one side and a Shimano style pedal on the other side. Mary Ellen is going to use these and I am going to use her much loved Shimano pedals on the front. Ben, was super helpful and offered to switch pedals for us. We ended spending a couple of hours visting, talking bikes, drinking coffee and playing with Elvis-Ben's dog.
