Rest day in Eisenach

Today was the perfect day to take as a rest day. We'd decided last night to take today off and this morning the weather has turned again to "dreary"...cold, overcast and windy. With the laundry done, we go out to explore the city. Our WS host lives very close to the city center and by the train station. There is a pedestrian tunnel under the station that shortens the walk to the center.

Eisenach is a great place to take a rest day. Last night we saw the 1000 year old Wartburg castle that is a UNESCO world heritage site. This is the most famous German castle. In the 12th century, the castle was the residence of Elizabeth of Hungary. In 1521, Martin Luther found protection here while he translated the New Testament. In the afternoon, walking around the city we also saw his house that was closed for now for renovation.

The center has maps and signs indicting the sites to see making navigation around very easy. We walked past the native home of Johann Sebastian Bach. Eisenach is the first of the five city "Stadte kette": Eisenach-Gotha-Erfurt-Weimar-Jena. Tomorrow we continue on to Weimar.
