Day 5: To Swakopmund: Along the Skeleton Coast to a german town

There is a beautiful morning light on the landscape. We made our own itinerary for today, staying farther north and then along the Skeleton Coast. Pictures tell the starkness of the landscape the best.

We stopped at Cape Cross to see the Sea Lion Colony, the population can flucuate between 80,000 and 110,000 seals. There were plenty of pups, with a lot of dead pups.

Into Swakopmund, we find our accommodation Pension Rapmund, then explore the area. Swakopmund has a Germanic history, founded in 1892, with architecture and business culture. We find a restaurant with German beers, it's late afternoon, only to find that the kitchen is closed, reservations are needed for dinner that will be served at 7pm. The tourist shops are closed by 5pm, even when it's now low tourist numbers, they do not stay open for business.

On the road early headed northwest towards the coast.

Skeleton Coast is a National Park and does not allow bikes for some reason.

A lot of desert out here. This is one of the driest places on earth. It very seldom rains here, plants have learned to survive on condensation from the ocean fog that sometimes rolls in.

About 200km of this. Not sure if we would want to do this on a bike.

We are surprised about the number of dead pups. Seems like there are more dead than alive.

Swakopmund has a distinct german feel, for better or for worse......
