Day 3: Full day gamedrive in Etosha: watering holes galore

"We are so lucky to live near Yellowstone National Park, we do the same there as we are doing now on, only looking for different animals: Bison, bear, elk, and moose, while here we look for giraffe, kudus, rhinos and lions" Patrick says as we drive on safari in Etosha NP. It's always about the luck of the safari as to what you will see, every hunt is different.

The park gate opens at sunrise, 0610. We are driving through the gate at 0611! The rules of the park include "stay in your car", so Rachel has made our sandwiches for the day for easy access from the cooler in the backseat. Makes for a long stretch without stretching! We are not so used to this after almost 8 months on the bike.

By the end of the day, we had driven 450 kms around the park.

At one viewpoint we can drive out onto the Etosha Pan. A pan is a lake without an outflow, the water sits there after the wet season until it evaporates and leaves a salt flat-plain.

The roads are very well marked in Etosha, with the help of a paper map we can find all the places we like to visit.

Some jackals are feasting on this giraffe. We think it must have died from old-age or disease. If lions would have brought it down not much would have been left for the jackal.
