Ajanta Caves: About 2000 years old and amazing!

We share a tuk-tuk with five guys back to the Ajanta junction. They are all workers at the cave site. As tourists we first pay 10rupees each as a facility fee for the bus station / souvenir stall area. Then 15rupee pp for the 4km bus ride to the caves. There we finally pay our 250rp entrance fee. We don't feel like we are being fleeced; it is just the way they do things in India.

The caves are amazing. Carved between 200AD and 600BC and abandoned once construction started at Ellora, the caves lay forgotten until "discovered" by an Englishman in 1819. They are excavated in a narrow horseshoe shaped river canyon. As recommended we escape the morning crowd be heading to the last group of caves and working our way back. The carvings and color paintings are amazing, but we'll let the photos do the talking:

The security guard of the first cave we visit is Buddhist. He unlocks the cave and starts his day with a prayer.
