Travel Day: Boulder to Canmore
A warm drop off and pick up!
Boulder -> Denver -> Calgary -> Canmore
Travel day! Turns out flying to Canada is a way more chill travel day than flying to Peru. Plus we feel more experienced in navigating the airport with a tandem this time around. We strategically packed our bags in a more organized way (one throw-away duffel from a family friend, one free bike-to-work day backpack, one old shopping bag and one pannier bag with old climbing tat attached).
We feel lucky to have friendly faces at both ends of the journey. Erin’s uncle took us to the Denver airport and we are staying with Warmshowers hosts Lyle and Kirsten at their house in Canmore. We took the Banff airporter bus from Calgary to Canmore. It’s great to meet fellow members of the bikepacking community and we feel so appreciative of everyone’s generosity. We will also start with familiar faces early on as Erin’s parents will meet us a few nights in (to celebrate Erin’s 30th birthday!). How fun to have so many people nearby!
Of course, traveling with a tandem is never boring. We are extremely grateful to have a direct flight this time around because our bike box came out of baggage claim partially destroyed! The rear end was sticking out!!! TSA must have untaped the box to inspect and they tried to re-tape, but didn’t do a good enough job so the box fell apart. We are hoping the bike is ok—we will find out tomorrow morning when we re-assemble!

We feel excited, nervous and also like we are taking things a few days at a time. It’s hard to plan for a ~45 day adventure so we have started with the first 6. It also feels comforting to know we will have more access to bike shops and the ability to order things online and have them shipped to us if needed.
The first few decisions of our journey include what alternates of the route to take and when to start (Aug 1 or Aug 2). Turns out there are many route options to get from Banff to the US border (high Rockies alternate, flathead alternate, etc.). We are assessing weather, as well as pros and cons of each route and will pick our route based on these factors and our stoke for hike-a-bike.
We are sure this journey will bring its own set of challenges, adventures and excitement and we are stoked to tackle them together!
Thanks for following along!
