Off to Avignon

We set off for Avignon after a slight delay because the first car we were given did not fit my bike box so we had to go back to the rental car place and exchange it.  Once on the way we stopped in Arles for lunch and some touring.  Arles is famous for the Roman theatre and Vincent Van Gogh.  We arrived in Avignon in the late afternoon to meet the owner of the VRBO we had rented.  This place is amazing.  It is an old chapel dating back to the 1300’s.  It has been beautifully restored into a home with all of the modern amenities.  One of the nine popes who resided in Avignon when it was the papal seat even stayed here for 2 years.  This is right up there with the coolest places I have ever stayed.  I could easily stay here for a couple of weeks and just tour the area.

The Roman theatre in Arles.

At the Van Gogh foundation a place where Van Gogh stayed when it was a hospital trying to deal with his mental illness.

A bust of Van Gogh with symbols of his life. The famous sun flowers he painted, a nice for cutting off his ear, painting tools, a pipe and pistol that he used to end his life at age 37.

The ceiling in the master bedroom. The “T” symbol was for the monks who inhabited this building and represents a crutch. They looked after the sick in a hospital adjacent to this chapel. That building is now a hotel.

Another view of the salon leading into the master bedroom, open door. The door is a former armoire converted to a grand entrance to the master bedroom. There is another one that leads out of the salon to the staircase.

The armoire/exit from the salon to the rest of the chapel.
