up at 04 55 a.m. to allow plenty of time for a 6 o’clock start. It did not really help that I needed to do two trips to reception to drop luggage off and collect my breakfast and that is miles away and the big hotel. All done and we were away by 6:09 am. This was a few minutes before official sunrise but plenty of light on the main road to be seen and to see where we were going.
The first couple of hours were absolutely fine in terms of temperature. Quickly warmed up from the low of about 18. or 19. And although there were not many designated climbs on the route they were a load of consistent one or 2% sapped our energy energy and made us warmup substantially . By 0930. It was well into the mid 30s and I had already made the decision to jump into the van at the 70 KMark along with about five others.
Beautiful scenery today with lovely Cork Oakes with their Cork stripped back and lorry loads of cork being taken off to market or to their factory locations.
Having finished the ride by about 1030, we were at the hotel by midday and immediately spent three or four hours in the reception just lounging around trying to keep cool. Eventually, room check-in was about three-ish for most people and the usual explosion of suitcase and dirty clothing and washing the day kit was followed by much-needed nap.
at 7 pm I had a conference call with Parkinsons UK for something I’m helping with as a volunteer, then a team meeting at 7:30 to come up with a plan for tomorrow namely repeat what we did today. A 6 am start a slightly longer ride than I actually achieved at 81K, but less amount of climbing. Forecast is 41 at Beja
