Today was our hottest day yet and the lack of wind and direct sunlight made the long climb even more challenging (5.5 miles, 1800ft).We had climbed this hill before but from a different starting point. I had also previously descended this climb too and it reiterated strongly that downhill is just so much better!
We did see a great memorial for WWII and it talks about pilots landing in enemy territory and then you realize the long grassy stretch nearby was the runway! So much admiration and gratitude for those brave men.
Being a Saturday, the cyclists were out in force and apparently our climb was very popular . We saw more bikes than cars and as we climbed, lots of bikers came whizzing down. Then we saw a large group at the top having coffee (ok cappuccino) and they made me the think of my beloved Barkley group.
Just as I was getting overheated from another climb, there was a great overlook at the top with a complete bike station with bike-stand, tools and a pump with a cold water fountain which we promptly poured over Holly’s head. Holly felt so much better. Next to it was some old WW2 artillery.
We also went into a cemetery and looked at the many big family areas and thought about it the importance of family to Italians.
Our hotel is just in a surreal country side spot and boy oh boy that pool felt great! ….and it was pointed out that I have NOT been showing Peppa pics so I included a few favorites from the trip so far.
Today's ride: 31 miles (50 km)
Total: 61 miles (98 km)
