Day 7: Lake Brockman to Yarri Hut

Today, we passed through no real attractions, the trail notes were “mostly pleasant single track” and it wasn’t that long.
But we sure managed to bring the drama.

the day started off well, although I was later than our planned rendezvous time at the cafe. We had a nice coffee and rolled out about 9:30.

We took the road for the first section instead of the parallel track then turned onto a very stick filled descent. I could hear Jimmy and Noah behind me talking about green hydrogen. I just thought about the trail. I’m feeling significantly more refreshed than when I left but still not that keen for that conversation.

We kept following a mix of single track and forestry roads. When we stopped for a break in a clearing, Noah and Maggie went on ahead. We caught Maggie at the top of a big hill but didn’t see Noah.

At the bottom, we came to a delightful bridge across a pool. Joe fully immersed himself but jimmy and I could only manage a splash. I put my feet in and they were cold for hours.

So clear!

We watched a big fish swim upstream, remembered that we’d been passing signs all day saying swimming is prohibited in drinking water catchments and moved swiftly on. That’s a joke cause we were with jimmy who doesn’t move very swiftly on or off the bike. Joe and I waited for him at a corner listening to a cacophony of cockatoos.

The others had sailed on past the delightful pool to try and catch Noah but we had said our rendezvous point would be a more major road. When we got there, we were pretty hungry so had lunch. Someone had written on a fire warning sign: gone 2 yarri - NBA but we didn’t know if those were Noah’s initials.

We had a very convivial lunch. It’s actually easier to talk to 2 people than 6 people at once. Then Joe was limbering up for a chase but we rolled down a short hill and found Maggie, Sam and Ben. Maggie’s wheel had buckled on the force of a big stick or hole but Sam and Ben had managed to retrue it by loosening off some spokes while also drying their tents. Jimmy and I put our tents briefly in the sun then rolled on another few hundred metres and found Noah having a nap.

He’d become convinced we’d taken the road as we hadn’t passed him so he bushbashed out to the road, then rode it to the spot where he made the message , then rode around the corner to the next road and decided to wait. So we all ended up having separate lunches within the space of about a km. Jimmy, Joe and mine was the least stressful. Poor Noah thought we’d all had an accident or left him behind somehow until he realised he couldn’t see any tracks.

after a happy reunion, Sam, Ben and Joe decided to take off for the hut while Noah was struggling and Jimmy was loving life in the slow lane. Maggie bought a tree book at lake Brockman so we identified jarrah to around 60% certainty and maybe marri. We definitely took some tree appreciation in at the back. There was a final run down another rail line and then up a few hills on the road before finally reaching the Yarri hut which is built basically on the track. It’s a half size hut so joe, Maggie and I set up tents.

Delightful campsite and final resting place of my kindle
