Day 3: Carinyah to Wungong huts
There were a few snorers (potentially me included) last night but the full moon was so glorious that I had to get out to enjoy it for a bit. It was not too cold so I experimented a little and found out that it’s warmer to sleep without my old fleece jumper but with socks.
It was a gloriously blue sky day today. It still took us a long time to get going with some bike repairs for Noah, water filtering and sitting in chairs. We rolled out at 9:30.
I don’t think we’re very far from Perth but it feels like we didn’t pass any civilisation except two highways all day.
We passed the first trail obstacle in the form of a fallen tree that had a reasonably good track around it.
We crossed the Brockton highway, and climbed up a slow hill. I was behind with James and Maggie and we found the others decided to have lunch near another trail obstacle of a cut up tree. We haven’t yet instigated the trail talk to determine where we should have breaks. I thought we should’ve continued on to the Canning River and but it turned out to be a good decision.
We’re all travellling with different styles of food - Sam has dehydrated Dahl for lunch and spaghetti bolognaise for dinner every night. Maggie has a larger variety of dehydrated meals. Joe, Ben, Jimmy and I have a combo of wraps and fresh food and Noah is worried he doesn’t have enough food to get to dwellingup.
We continued climbing after lunch and I felt a bit sluggish but then we entered an amazing bit of single track mountain biking trail down to the Canning river which was glorious. The Canning River was just a small stream with no real access or facilities.
We washed off to varying degrees, Noah, Ben and Jimmy got as fully immersed as they could in a shallow stream while Maggie and I just washed off our legs. Noah demonstrated commitment by basically doing a push up into the cold water.
After that there was pea gravelly uphill which made us happy for the rain. It was quite hot and fully blue sky. I’ll try to remember this when it’s cold and rainy. After a while we reached the Albany highway and skirted along it for a while on not a very good track but we did see an echidna. After the highway, it was a nice run down what felt like old rail trail to the turn off to Wungong Hut. It’s not forecast to rain tonight so Maggie, Joe, Ben and I have set up tents on the tent pads instead of sleeping in the hut so we’ll see how that goes.
Sam has bought a bunch of Mungo MacCallum cryptic crosswords cut out of old newspapers which is tonight’s after dinner entertainment, along with a hot chocolate for me and bike maintenance for Noah.
Today's ride: 37 km (23 miles)
Total: 112 km (70 miles)
