Day 11: Donnybrook to Nannup

There was no rain or fire alarms overnight so we woke up refreshed. I had luxury breakfast of crumpets with peanut butter and honey before heading to the cafe for a coffee. It was not as good as yesterday’s unfortunately.

Sam and Ben decided to ride straight out without going to the cafe. We had decided to take the road to Jarrahwood to avoid sandy wet pine plantation roads.

The first 14k was on a quiet undulating paved road. There’s so much water around in the rivers. The Munda Biddi actually goes on this road for about 4ks and then soon after it turned off we also turned off onto the gravel Jarrahwood road under a stormy sky.

the heavens opened about half an hour before I got to Jarrahwood so I got out my rain gear for the first time. I made the tactical error of putting on my booties first then pants so got sand inside my pants but otherwise all worked well.

The Nala Mia hut is actually in the township of Jarrahwood which had a heyday in the 1950s probably and is now a ramshackle collection of caravans and houses and abandoned cars. I didn’t get a good vibe last time so had vetoed staying there but it was convenient to have a dry lunch spot. I cleaned my chain the best I could to quiet the disturbing crunching. Sam, Ben and Noah rode out into a rain squall that the rest of us waited out.

From Jarrahwood to Nannup is a delightful rail trail

just after this picture, Maggie and I stopped to take off our rain pants and it almost immediately started raining again. It did fine up after that and we made quick progress on the rail trail.

I caught up to Joe, Sam and Ben at this vista just before town

joe has been drying his clothes waiting for us but the skies were threatening again so we hooted into Nannup and arrived at the balcony of the microbrewery just as it started pissing down rain and then hailing.

We did a lap of the Main Street then went back to the park near the bridge for lunch and to shelter from the periodic squalls of rain.

It was more architecturally pleasing than functional

We had a group decision making process about whether to stay or ride on further that was decided when Jimmy said he wouldn’t ride further so we all stayed to keep the band together. We went to a cafe and drank chai while it continued to rain.

We set up at the caravan park, had a delightful shower and then came to the microbrewery for a fire and dinner, hoping it’s not raining too much on our tents.

Today's ride: 60 km (37 miles)
Total: 495 km (307 miles)
