Teslin to Squanga Lake Campground

In an effort to accelerate publishing these dispatches, I’m going to abbreviate the narrative. To be honest, I’ve had one day of rest since I started and I’m in a hurry to get to Whitehorse so I can have the entire Memorial Day weekend to rest and visit with Kathy (and celebrate my birthday!).

I had a great night of sleep and awoke to the sounds of warblers around my tent. The restaurant was a short walk away and I had my fill of coffee and breakfast. I planned a shorter ride today, so leaving later was an option. I returned to pack up, parked my bicycle in front of the restaurant, and returned to the restaurant so I could complete a few journal entries.

When I entered in my neon outfit, the host asked me if I was on bicycle and if my name was Kurt. When I replied, she gave me this card:

They left their phone #s.

These are the little things that go a long way on a bicycle trip. Thanks Ralph and Jean!

I no sooner got going on a journal entry when a motorcyclist struck up a conversation with me. He was returning from Whitehorse where he met his wife for a week-long holiday. They lived in Prince George and he drove his motorcycle to Whitehorse while his wife took a jet. They rented a car and visited all the northern sights for a week before she returned home. Bruce was returning on his motorcycle. Turns out we had a lot in common including our professional histories in education. We talked about Canadian politics, economics, and tried to steer clear of 47. By the time our conversation was over, I needed to get on the road and so did Bruce. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much writing done.

I saw many more black bears on this section of road. In fact, I saw two with the white chest patches or “blazes” just below their necks. It was a distinguishing look for a plain ol’ black bear!

After a fairly pleasant ride, I arrived to the campground and found a park ranger on a ladder propped against a tree where he was mounting a security camera. Since the firewood in the campgrounds is free, firewood thieves raid the bins. And, because the campground is not far from Whitehorse and the lake is lined with many vacation homes, it’s come down to security cameras … in the Yukon!

I found a nice site overlooking the lake. After making a fire, heating water, eating, and crawling onto my tent, I fell asleep listening to distant loons.
