Big Creek Campground to Swift River wild camp
Woke up to a cold (30º’s) rain. As I broke camp, Ralph called me over for a cup of coffee! What a savior. We continued our talk from yesterday and they shared their trip details. They had been on the road since July 2024. They sold all their possessions and said goodbye to their respective families. They’ve traveled across Canada, down to the southwest U.S. and then back up into western Canada. I enjoyed their camaraderie under the van’s awning and drinking a fresh cup of coffee. They left about an hour before me with modest mileage intentions. They were going to Teslin, about two hours (in a car) up the road.
I gathered gear and packed my panniers in the picnic shelter. I waited until the rain started to subside, and then about 11 am headed out towards an unknown destination where I planned to wild camp for the night. A prickly headwind blew the dark clouds away, but made my life a bit more difficult.
The only distraction today was stopping to help Tommy from Teslin fix a flat on his trailer. He kept me company in fairly rainy conditions. A pick up truck stopped to ask if we needed anything. I said, “A cup of coffee?” which drew a laugh. They left. Tommy’s workflow was interesting because everything was less than organized. He had everything he needed, though, and I left him with his blowout replaced and ready for the road.
The rain finally quit and eventually I found a place to pitch my tent for the night. Tomorrow I will make it to Teslin where I hope to get a motel room.
