St Albans, VT - Oh, Canada! - CycleBlaze

St Albans, VT

Thursday, June 28, 2018

Well, the boys, Jerry and Lee, headed for St Albans today on Amtrak's Train Number 54, The Vermonter. By all accounts, things went smoothly, including the roll-on service for the bikes, although Jerry later emailed me saying:

"The train ride was pleasant.  Really empties out after Springfield, MA.  Schedule says train arrives in St. Albans at 8:50 PM, but our hotel desk clerk told us the train always arrives at 9:30 PM.  So plan to arrive at 9:30.
Also, I found out after the fact that we were supposed to remove our front wheels before hanging the bikes, but nobody said anything."

Sometimes, all's well that ends well. I rode 28 miles last night with Mark, climbing about 1000 feet. I felt it in the right knee a bit today but still did a three-mile walk, which felt good. Baby steps?

Jerry's Surly on the "rack," headed for Vermont. They secured a seat nearby. Even if you were to remove it, I'm not sure where one would store the front wheel! Seems silly.

Jacquie GaudetI can’t tell from the photo but isn’t the bike hanging by its front wheel?

Tom FlournoyTo Jacquie GaudetYes, it is. I think they want you to remove the wheel. I've taken this train to St Albans to meet Tom's Canada tour in 2022, and I had to take the wheel off. I just laid it on the floor underneath. -Mark

Jacquie GaudetTo Tom FlournoyMakes me really curious how you hang a bike vertically with its front wheel removed.

Tom FlournoyTo Jacquie GaudetYou hang the rear wheel instead and IIRC, you lower the saddle as well. Just remember to bring bungee cords so it doesn't move around. -Mark
