Staying at the abbey was Jerry's idea. He was intrigued. I had reservations but was willing to give it a try. But, as it turned out, I am not on this leg of the trip. Regardless, that was the first day's goal for the boys: 62 miles and 2650 feet of climbing. My knee, in its current state, would have suffered! But one day, yes, I will make this trip! In the meanwhile, here is Jerry's trip report:
"Today was really great riding even if it was a little warm and we had to take a detour because of a road closure. That added several miles to the ride. Total miles were 67. The Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail was the perfect way to start the trip. It began just outside Saint Albans. It was quiet and went along the river at times. Lots of corn and cows along the way, mountains in the distance, and the occasional stand of maple trees connected by plastic tubing for collecting the sap.
The town of Sutton in Québec was a surprise. I thought it would be desolate, but it appeared to be a thriving destination with boutiques and restaurants and cyclists everywhere. We had lunch there. Lee walked into a chi-chi-looking bike shop there looking for Butt Butter. They had it but at $30 CAN for a tube he decided to look elsewhere.
I'm never certain what language to address people in around here. Seems there is a mix of French and English speakers who live here. It also appears that towns with Anglo names are being renamed with French names.
The monastery is a comfortable stay in a lovely setting. Silence predominates. No talking at meals. The library is slightly more relaxed but even there people just whisper. Wi-Fi is from 7 AM to 7 PM only. T-Mobile reception is good though. Overall this place is a pretty good deal. $80 CAN for a private room with sink and 3 meals included isn't bad."
