Day 12 - Dog day

A beautiful day for cycling with full sun and high of 72. Left the hostel in Hindman on our way to another hostel in Booneville. Just 3 miles in and I encountered 3 medium size dogs standing in the middle of road looking menacing. I decided to pick up speed and pull out a water bottle to squirt them if need be. Two got very close but I outran them. This was just one of 3 different dog encounters. A large fast dog nearly caught me later in the day. I was told dog encounters diminish past this point.

Kentucky and Virginia both have a long history with tobacco that still lingers today

George CastleI wonder if those dogs were tobacco chewing dogs. A little wound up

July of 2022 eastern Kentucky experienced the worst flooding they ever had. Dozens of bridges and hundreds of homes were swept away. The route goes down a road that had a bridge washed out last year

Not what you want to see

A new culvert had been installed and back filled with large gravel. Had to slide my bike and myself down the gravel embankment and then walk about 200 feet across the stone to get back on the road

This was the current state

When is the last time you saw a 4 wheeler on a pole?

Passed a bunch of small named cemeteries. Likely family plots

Nice house with some very unusual bird houses on long poles

Elizabeth HendersonCorrect me if I am wrong, but I think those are for Purple Martins (as opposed to Purple Martians… )

Keith AdamsTo Elizabeth HendersonThat's my thinking as well. They nest in small colonies, in little nooks well off the ground.

Steve ClarkGlad you got past the dogs. I’ve seen some nasty bite wounds on riders’ legs. They have pepper spray, stun guns, and ultrasonic deterrents for self-defense against dogs. Never know what other wily critters may come after Hondo the RoadRider.

Stay safe.

Keith AdamsI'm getting tired just *looking* at that profile. Glad you didn't run into the dogs on the climbs.
