Day 11 - Coal country

Crossed over into Kentucky today. Eastern Kentucky is the coal mining area with some mining still happening but it is a fading industry. The area we ride through was the poorest I have ever seen in the US. Lack of opportunity is apparent everywhere.

Saw a lot of this type of thing today. Steep hills and rainfall brings on road damage

I have seen dozens and dozens of these signs. Always thought if I need to beware of your dog, you need a new dog

This is Lloyd Tufts who I talked to for about 15 minutes while waiting for the rain to pass. He spent his whole career in the coal industry. One of his relatives donated the property Tufts University sits on

Steve ClarkThe elevation changes look pretty severe this stretch. Legs feeling good? Brake pads or discs?

Due west to Carbondale.
You’re doing great!!
Love seeing the real countryside, and not just the interstate views or Chamber of Commerce brochure pics.
