Around Mt Taranaki

A group photo tonight in Stratford under Mt Taranaki.

Today is the first of the 2 biggest days of the tour unless one opts for additional distance.  Our ride as per the map took us 3/4 the way around Mt Taranaki.  The first part was up, up, up but not too steep.  Once we reached Pukeiti the worst but not all was over.  Pukeiti is a beautiful garden known for its ferns and rhododendrons.   The 90km ride with 4600ft of climbing was actually good fun.  The mountain didn’t cooperate too much but a least there was no rain.

We have very interesting bikes on this tour. Here we have a 20 year old steel Lemond with probably 100,000 miles on it. Take note of the seat it looks the Keas have been eating it.

There is new centre and cafe (that was closed today) at Pukeiti. These beautiful carvings are there.
