It would be great to ride east out of the city of La Serena, up the Alqui valley, which leads to the 4800m altitude "Paso Agua Negra" across into Argentina, but unfortunately that road is only open in Summer. Then the next road across the Andes to the north is via "Paso San Francisco", I don't quite fancy from a look at the map. It is a long way over remote altiplano. Further north are "Paso de Sico" and to the north of it "Paso de Jama". The later I've ridden in both directions in 2009, on a wee ride from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama, and back, and although easy on the way back (west to east) having had a tailwind, I won't want to be riding it a third time. That really only leaves the former, the Paso de Sico. So I'll be continuing north on route 5 to Antofagasta, or thereabouts, then inland to the tourist mega which is San Pedro, before the 500 kms across the Andes to Salta. Anyway, this is my rough idea of a possible route on from La Serena.

Today's ride: 70 km (43 miles)
Total: 9,064 km (5,629 miles)
