Neumengem: We have done 2000km

Last night we went to the Bitburger Worst House for a meal. Despite my in depth knowledge of the sausage varieties available at Pokeno Bacon I didn't recognise a single one so it was a stab in the dark. What I got was a large sausage coiled up like a snail with a massive dollop of sauerkraut. It was very good as was the handle of Bitburger that accompanied it.

We have decided that we will eave much later so it felt a very relaxed morning, getting up later, talking to Jane on the phone then having a relaxed breakfast. The weather all day was showery but not too bad. We started on the right side of the river. This was a mistake as we were on a poor track and going through endless industry on The outskirts of Trier. As soon as we could we transferred to the left on a pedestrian path on a rail bridge. Now we seemed to be on a super highway with hundreds of other cyclists nearly all going the same way as us. Most of them were on organised tours with their luggage being carried from one pre booked hotel to the next. There were very few who had heavily laden bikes like us. Every time when a shower came there was a crowd under the next bridge waiting it out. We were lucky during one shower that we came to a cafe and when we went in they had a roaring fire.

For much of the day we were riding among immaculate vineyards. Some grapes are already picked and there was some picking going on. All the whites were in poor order with a lot of rot and on tasting seemed as if they would have a brix of only about 18 and very high acids. The few reds seemed a lot better We felt very sorry for the growers here this year

Tonight we are staying in Neumagem in a gorgeous room with views over the river, Neumagem is another town dating back to Roman times and again they are proud of this heritage. Today it is a wine making village

With the elections soon there are posters everywhere
