Kitzingen: Elaction Day in Germany

The Main Radweg really is a fantastic ride and we certainly have been enjoying it. We set off from the lovely Wurzburg in sunshine and temperatures slightly higher than they have been recently. On a Sunday morning it was a contrast to the crowds of yesterday. Coming out of it the riverside park that had so impressed us yesterday continued for another 3 kilometres The dog walkers, the joggers, the cyclists and the families with young children were all enjoying it and so were we.

Wurzburg is surrounded by vineyards on all sides but while yesterday there was frenetic activity picking grapes today on a Sunday all was quite in the vineyards. However as we rode past buildings that must have been wineries we could smell that very characteristic smell of newly fermenting grapes. Ken looked in one and there was a massive clean up going on. I always think that wine making is largely cleaning!

Because we had a short distance to do we went into every town and village. In one of them there was a massive car boot sale selling an extraordinary array of junk. Ken has been nagging me to buy another warm jacket. What did he see but someone selling a rack of them. I managed to prevent him buying me a used jacket in a particularly unfortunate colour. In another we sat outside a backerie and enjoyed the sun, the view of the ancient buildings and our coffee and pastry

Yesterday was the day of our general election in New Zealand. Today it was Germany’s election, it was interesting to see the people going papers in hand to the polling booths. It was good to see that there were no long queues. We will watch German TV tonight to see the results coming in, not of course that we will understand a word of the comments!

It was over another old stone bridge into Kitzengen. This led us straight into the old town with once more half timbered houses and a cobbled pedestrian Main Street where we could have a good poke around. Our hotel has the unusual name Tiptop, I felt a bit concerned about how it would be but we have an enormous comfortable room complete with arm chairs and Ken is able to get a CNN fix

We had to go up from the garage in a car lift
