Ibis Hotel Frankfurt Airport: The wheels stop turning

The wheels have stopped turning and we are in Kelsterbach near the Frankfurt Airport. I wouldn't say it is the most exciting place to have an overseas holiday. We seem to be surrounded by logistic companies but there are two supermarkets across the road and the hotel makes great toasted sandwiches and a very good breakfast with waffles so we won't starve

Yesterday we cycled out of Frankfurt over a pedestrian bridge and once more were riding along the Main. Yesterday was Reunification Day so it really seemed like a Sunday. People were out jogging, riding bikes, walking dogs and playing with their children. The day was sunny but fairly chilly. Today must be a very important day for Germans as it is for the whole world.

When we got to the hotel we continued along the river to work out the route we would need to take today. It led to a pedestrian bridge over the river, it had one problem it had a steep flight of steps at each end, even unloaded as the bikes would be they are really heavy for us to hawl up a steep flight of stairs. We would rethink our route

We are staying at the Ibis here which is adequate but I think we will get fairly sick of this little room although the toasted sandwiches are delicious

Today we were up early, had breakfast and on our way. Back down to the river and we followed the signs to Hattersheim. It was a rather nervous ride as Ken had three broken spokes on his rear wheel and I watched the wheel wobble as we went along and prayed that it wouldn't collapse - at least he had no load. From Hattersheim to Kriftel was easy as we had worked that out when we were here about two weeks ago. It was 4Riders that we were aiming for as they had said that they would pack our bikes for us. We felt a little nervous that that would happen but never anywhere have we had such pleasant and good service. The main thing the young man who packed them said was ‘no problem’. While he packed them we retired to the ultimate German Backerie for coffee. When we returned he called a large taxi for us and when it arrived he and his mate loaded the bikes. All this for only 20€. The taxi man was just as good and soon we were back at the Ibis and the boxes safely stowed away

The wheels have stopped turning. This has once again been a wonderful trip one that I really thought wouldn't happen, we have done 2882km around beautiful places in France and Germany. We certainly are extremely fortunate to be able to do this. Ken's back now seems to be back to normal. My knee and ankle have given me little trouble while riding though I don't walk well but that is largely due to the other knee that needs some attention

Now we just have to wait until our flight on Friday and get used to this unaccustomed inactivity for the next 48 hours. Tomorrow I will write a summary of the different cycle routes
