Altenkunstadt: Harder than we thought it would be

Last night we ate in our excellent hotel. Ken once more had bratwurst and kraut with his beer, I rather think he is getting addicted. The people at the hotel were so friendly, there is not a word of English among them but was amazing how well we got on

Today was another very short day but it was not as easy as we imagined it would be. The route twists and turns taking you from one side of the now smaller plain to the other. The signage continued to be good but we had to keep alert not to miss one. The small towns continued but now there were fewer of them. We came to the much bigger town of Lichtenfels, this is a town known for basket making and it is said that it supplies most of the basketwork in Germany. It was certainly rather a nightmare to get in and we were dicing with big trucks to eventually be spat into the rather nice central area. Leaving was similar but we got onto quieter roads and cycle tracks. At one point we came to an unsealed muddy track leading up into the forest. We have had enough of those sort of tracks, the usual outcome being that they gradually get worse and worse until they are impassible with loaded bikes - Ken managed to come up with a better alternative

Altenkunstadt I had expected to be a reasonably sized town but it really is very small. It has a massive brewery, after hunting we managed to find a backerie. Of course it was about to close but the woman was good enough to restart the coffee machine to make us ‘coffee to go’ so we bought two big bits of cake and had our lunch on a seat we found outside the backerie. The jewel in the crown however is the hotel, the man running it is lovely and looking at the restaurant I should be able to escape bratwurst and kraut tonight
