Christmas Day

Photos from yesterday

Yes, that's right! It's Christmas Day and we just stayed out at our lovely resort for the day, but I did want to finish posting pics from our visit to Chichen Itza, so that's what today will be. Enjoy!

It is interesting to see how the builders of Chichen Itza incorporated elements of both the Puuc style that we saw at Uxmal and the style that we saw in Palenque. This is more Puuc - protruding noses, carved figures in the stone

This jaguar is more of the Palenque style - plaster on top of stucco and then painted.

On this jaguar (there are a lot of them around!) you can still see some of the paint

Elaborate roof combs are another Palenque kind of thing

Then there were a couple of things that made Chichen Itza stand out as worthy of a visit, despite the huge crowds and endless throngs of people selling anything and everything along every single pathway. For example, the Observatory is spectacular.

And then there is the ball court, which I have to say is like the Rose Bowl of ball courts!

See that hoop way up there? Could you get a ball up there without using your hands? Yikes!

And this is the stairway up to the viewing platform. Hey Tom, I think this must be worse than Michigan's stadium seating!

Ok, one more picture

What is that little guy on the lower left? Is it a lizard? Is it a fish? Is it both? What say you?
