Fernie - Elkford

JI had a 4 pod room to myself, but OMG, it was hot! They left floor level lighting on all night, so I had to shut the curtain, and run the fan. I was pleased when it got light enough to get up!
The route through to Sparwood was on a mix of Hwy 3 and little used old roads.

On the 3rd turn off the hwy 2 dogs appeared out of the forest and started "chasing" me. One was particularly snarly and seemed intent on taking a bite. I squirted it with my water bottle, but this didn't stop it. The owner was sitting in a car watching and doing nothing. I should have used the bear spray.
Just before Sparwood the road became single track in the mtb park, so I bailed out at the RV park, let Gerry2 re-route me, and got thoroughly lost.
I did not see the giant green mining truck, or anywhere to sell me food. I did ride an overgrown trail and come face to face with a double rail track without a crossing. After a steep HAB I did get onto the route but was grumpy about being confused. (I really did need that food!)
I opted for hwy 43 to Elkford, and in the rain showers it was at least less muddy than the unpaved route. It was also busy with mine vehicles and trucks.
In Elkford I shared a site in the Municiple CG with Kurt and Ray. This CG had heated, spotlessly clean bathrooms and a big sheltered area we could all get our bikes into and share a picnic table.
We met James and Jake who had started in Banff and ridden 2 days in rain and mud. They were questioning their life choices but we reassured them some fine weather riding would see them right.
We had a fun afternoon swapping stories, and when the rain stopped around 6, we headed across the road for dinner.
Today's ride: 73 km (45 miles)
Total: 4,429 km (2,750 miles)
