Today ... We Pedal: Day 47 - Dunafoldvar to Mohacs

I have to start with a bit of an apology to Hungary. I more or less insinuated in yesterday's post that the riding conditions were going to continually deteriorate as we went south. There was none of that today.

While the landscape and scenery was very much 'more of the same', the riding we did was second to none. For our 130 km of cycling today, the vast majority was on excellent paved bike paths (some times shared with very local rural traffic) and a few stretches of smooth hard pack gravel. This was on par with anything we had in France and Germany. Oh, we also had a pretty stiff tailwind.

Three other cycle tourers today. One young Bulgarian guy, cycling home after working in Majorca for the summer. That's a pretty cool way of commuting! We also saw another couple a little younger than us heading north, into a strong wind. Bummer

We started the day in Dunafoldvar with a Spar breakfast on a park bench. It was great! A banana, yogurt, croissant, and get this ... 500 ml of cold non UHT chocolate milk! And it was sunny!

A great start to a very nice day of cycling. Not much to see or do, other than pedal, so that's bascically all we did.

This will be our last night in Hungary. Tomorrow we cross over into Croatia for a whistle stop tour. On Monday we will cross over in Serbia where we will be for 5 days or so. We figure we have about two weeks of cycling left to make it to Constanta.

Song of the Day

Down By the Water by The Decemberists

Today was a good day for listening to tunes while we pedaled. It's been several days since I've pulled out the boom, but today we had long stretches of isolated bike path all to ourselves with trees and farm fields to keep us company. I had lots to pick from, but settled on this tune to keep the water and river theme going.

Beautiful blue sky this morning ... interesting castle walls and yard behind the pension we stayed in last night

Apologies to Hungary for insinuating that their bike paths were deteriorating ... we rode mostly on trails like this today

We did have about 12 km of gravel, but it was smooth and very well packed. Great riding

At about the 80 km mark we came upon these cool statues by the bike path. Couldn't find any information on them so it's totally up to our imagination what they are about

...one more shot of them

Some of the riding were on single lane roads ... virtually no traffic

A barnyard menagerie at about the 110 km mark beside the bike trail

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. we've subsequently been informed (by our son who's a qualified sheep & goat judge - yes, that's a 'thing') that the sheep with the curly horns are Raka's. Apparently quite rare!
