Housekeeping: Day 34 - Rest Day in Passau

As noted earlier, the lack of internet whilst we've been camping has created quite a backlog in journal days. Today's forecast was for rain and clouds in the morning, which meant we would sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, and do our housekeeping (emails, banking and journal updates) before heading in to Passau to ... wander around and eat cake!

And that's what we did today.

We had another good meal at a Michelin recommended restaurant ... very traditional Bavarian but very well executed. Much different than last nights modern, and very well executed, Bavarian cuisine.

We've discovered that the Via Michelin website won't steer you wrong for food choices. The places it recommends are frequented more by locals, not tourists, and cost about the same as every other place. The quality however is always a notch or two above. Leave Google and Trip Advisor to the gormless masses!

Tomorrow we are off to Linz where we will visit Dusan and Lili, friends of K's sister and her husband. We've heard Linz is a lovely place. They suffered through a bit of infamy a while back when a local boy who caused quite a lot of trouble in the world about 80 yeas ago decided to adopt it as his hometown. I think they've got past that now though. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

Song of the day:

Landfill by Daughter ... a stark and beautiful song. Somewhat bleak, and that wasn't today, other than the sky, but it worked for me as I was typing away.

Today's lunch - that's mine .. When you cant decide between the poppyseed raspberry cake and the hazelnut chocolate kirche cake, well ... just have both

That's us at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, looking downstream.Austria on the right bank, Germany for a few more km's on the left. The Black Sea about another 1800 km along downstream!

The inside of St. Stephens Cathedral. The outside was a quite simple white washed stone, bereft of ornamentation. Step inside and it's a full on baroque onslaught! Very little stained glass thus lots of natural light to highlight the amazing and intricate sculpture and fresco's

The pipe organ, reportedly one of the largest in the world ... silent on Sunday ... the day we were here ... just another Clark Griswold experience!

The fresco at the top of the dome above the knave. It's at least 80 m above our heads. The detail is amazing. Taken with a 150 mm (equivalent) lens

From afar you just see opulence everywhere but zooming in you can see the incredible detail
