First Sight of the Big Smoke: Cowes to Mentone

Day 14
Cowes to Mentone (incl. ferry from Cowes to Stony Pt)
Friday 5 October 2012

As planned we caught the morning ferry from Phillip Island (Cowes) to Stony Point. There were quite a few cyclists on the ferry. The ticket was about $16 including the bike.

From Stony Point we found a route mostly by bikeways and backstreets across the peninsula to Frankston where we had lunch.

From Frankston we were definitely in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. The views across Port Phillip Bay were grand. The day turned out to be sunny, warm and clear despite the grim forecast.

From Frankston we pushed on to Mentone, mostly on bikeways. Here we decided to stop and find accommodation in a motel rather than go further into the city.

Tomorrow's forecast is for wet weather but it is only about 30 km from here into central Melbourne and the end of the ride.

Distance 62 km (excluding the ferry ride)
Average 14.7 km/ hr
Maximum 37 km/ hr
4 hrs 14 mins riding

We await the morning ferry on the Cowes wharf

The shore of Port Phillip Bay. Melbourne city is just up around the curve of the bay. About 40 km away from this viewpoint.
