Day 17 Lancaster OH to Deer Creek State Park

After packing and hitching up the trailer, Peter dropped me off west of Lancaster on his way to Deer Creek State Park. The day was overcast and relatively cool. The route to Circleville was pleasantly rolling but I felt low on energy in the early part of the ride.

Nice horse farm outside of Lancaster

The rolling topography continued until Circleville.

I liked this barn in Circleville across from a little park with a big name where I ate lunch.

A lot of cities in Ohio end in -ville. I wonder why. Circleville proper had quite a few nice old buildings.

Heading west, the land flattened out. In addition to corn, I began seeing wheat and soybeans.

Wheat as far as the eye can see

I noticed a lot of these fallow- looking wheat field. Are they winter crop or do they plant it to plow under like a cover crop? Where are the Grampies when you need them?

Susan WelchIt’s becoming increasingly popular for farmers to use winter wheat or winter barley as a cover crop. It’s a valuable regenerative practice, since wheat and barley roots sequester C02, and using it as cover protects the topsoil and retains nutrients! We work with growers out East who practice regen ag -

This was an interesting structure in front of a big farmhouse:

It had a wooden floor. Not sure what it’s used for.

The smaller farms gave way to mega farms

Our home for the night is Deer Creek State Park. Henry is very excited to find a squirrel colony on our site.
