Day 31 - 52 miles Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz

Today's ride wins, in my book the Best Shoulder of the ride award! All the way from HMB to SC it was around 6ft wide and CLEAN!!! no glass no trash except there were a lot of empty GU packets on the ground...bad bicycle riders!! Give us all a bad name. It was a pleasure to ride.--we later learned there was a triathlon there that day. Would have been fun to be in the middle of the race. We were up and on the road before 9AM as we knew we had a good fifty miles to do. We were excited to be on 'home turf' as we used to ride this portion of the trip annually with friends from the San Mateo area when we lived there. The day was very cold and foggy - we were waiting for the sun to come out but it never did. We remembered all the hills however going up some of them with packs was a little different. However all in all we just felt really strong today! Guess it is all those hard hills we did last week kicking in. We stopped at the Pie Ranch just before Ano Nuevo and bought the most beautiful mixed berry pie. Strawberry, blackberry and rhubarb or cherry not sure. We ate the entire pie in one setting! Got back on our bikes and rode like crazy for the next 25 miles!! The pie was great and the payoff....just after pie we found our Surly buddy Catherine. Was so good to find her after five days....we will ride with her tomorrow and she will spend the night with us in Monterey. All in all it was a good day on the bike!Leaving Half Moon Bay
