This is the much appreciated William S Clark who came over from Massachusetts to help create an Agricultural College at Sapporo University. He founded two universities on different sides of the globe…University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of Hokkaido (Sapporo). The irony of Clark’s legacy is that he is legendary in Japan while in Massachusetts, he is virtually forgotten. When he retired from Hokkaido University, faculty and his students accompanied him on horseback for about 13 miles. His parting words to his students was, “Boys, be ambitious”. That phrase is now legendary in Japan. To this day, Elementary School Books across Japan contain a photo of him and a brief story of his life.
The Botanical Gardens are a special place. Once you enter the gates you feel like you have been transported to a beautiful oasis. The property is very large with mature forests, water gardens, lush foliage giving a tropical feeling. It was lovely to walk this boardwalk.
The Glaudcidium Palmatum..the Japanese Wood Poppy are lovely. No blossoms at this time, but the foliage is very attractive, adding to the lush tropical feeling.
Loved this building’s exterior…one could disappear in here for an all nighter of “great beer”. Still can’t get my head around a place that is open from 6 pm to 6 am. Guess it shoes my age.
Karen PoretUnfortunately this is the same tenet for a liquor or grocery store when people need their food and beverages NOW.. Reply to this comment 1 week ago
The Botanical Gardens are part of the University. A very busy, special event was on. It was fun getting to see and feel the energy of the University students.
We had planned to visit some other parts of the campus but it was an afternoon that belonged to the students and the event happening…there was no way through.
