Sapporo is a city that has much to offer. Despite being the largest city north of Tokyo with a population of over 2 million people, Sapporo has a relaxed and welcoming vibe. I think it is our 3rd visit to Sapporo and we continue to find new treasures to explore. We like the people, the plethora of extensive beautiful parks, the rich culture whoch comes with four distinct seasons and the excellent museums that highlight Sapporo’s unique Hokkaiden history. We had 5 days here on this trip and the days went by all too fast. I’m sure that this won’t be our last visit to Sapporo. Our plan for the next few days is to head to Yubari and stay at the Yubari Forest Farm Hostel, reconnect with the daughter/mother team who run it and enjoy a very special Hokkaiden experience. The Hostel is off the beaten path…a hidden gem.
To reach the Hostel, we will ride the Shiroishi Kokoroad cycling path for 25 km to Kitahiroshima and then cut across country to Naganuma. looking forward to the luxury of this incredible designated bike route.
We took this bike route to Sapporo on our way north. It is a pleasure to revisit it. Love the beds of flowers along the route.
For some time we have been riding on the route through urban areas, yet protected from the chaos of the city with lots of flowers and parks alongside. Now we are in the country riding through a densely forested area. The sounds of the birds in the forest is deafening.
When we rode around Lake we found these fun riding companions for our handle bars at a bike shop. They have batteries and light up as the bike moves. .
Barry’s choice…the front and back show different images.
We have finished the bike route and are making our way to Naganuma. The poles with arrows pointing down to the side of the road indicate where the edge of the road is for winter driving and plowing the snow. Hokkaido gets lots of heavy snow in the winter. Yubari is just beyond those mountains.
