Cape Irago to Toyohashi

Staying at the Irago Resort and Conference Hotel was a wonderful experience. Yes, it is old and has seen better days but as we could see, Japanese people love to come here. The view is spectacular from anywhere in the hotel. The wall of our room which faces the ocean is completely glass, floor to ceiling and wall to wall. We were fascinated watching the fishing vessels, kayakers who paddled inside the breakwater, freighters, the hourly arrival and departure of the ferry and just simply enjoying the view.  As we have become accustomed, we were the only non Japanese people at the hotel.

As well as having a killer view, we spent some time in the hotel’s Onsen, enjoyed the breakfast buffet and just relaxed.

Some of the things we liked at breakfast. The small bowl on the right is a delicious custard with a topping like crème brûlée. We really enjoy Japanese curry, the salads, etc…all are delicious.

These Irises are so lovely and really stand out with their dramatic, rich purple colour.

A new area means new manhole covers. This image really nails the views we are enjoying along the coast.

This is a paradise for us to cycle through and certainly, for the countless surfers we have seen today.

We took a break and watched the surfers…and then we noticed this woman and her husband in front of us foraging for shellfish and other delicacies.

We get the feeling that this couple have done this most of their lives.

The riding today is what we dream of finding on a trip. Even the weather is ideal….no winds and the sun is shining.

Heading out to surf

We loved that we were able to ride right alongside the ocean where an endless line of surfers’ cars were parked. It seems to be a tight community who share this passion..

This amused us….what a great sign. There are no bathrooms along this stretch of the coast.

This surfer and his cat made our day. The cat was a bit tentative with us, but with his help, the cat began to let down his guard.

The cat is seriously considering coming closer. In the end, we both had our hands nuzzled by this lovely cat.

It was delightful to see the bond between this man and his cat.

One thing you can count on, if we see a Michi no Eki, we will probably stop. It gives us an insight into local culture, produce and crafts. There is always food and best of all, bathrooms

The produce and flowers at this Michi were excellent.

This bike was behind glass. Didn’t know Lexus had an interest in bikes.

This local train accepts bikes. You can just roll on without packing your bike in a bag.

There are two methods of growing rice in Japan. Dry rice farming and wet rice farming. The wet rice farming is a more popular method with better quality and a higher yield. It take 6 months to grow and harvest the rice between spring and autumn. Having travelled in Japan in spring and autumn, we have been able to witness both parts of this endeavour.

This farmer is unloading trays of rice seedlings to plant and his son will plant the rice seedlings by using a rice transplanter.

This farmer is done for the day and is giving his tractor a good rinse. The amount of mud coming off is incredible. We took to the road!

To make matters worse it started to rain. Fortunately, it happened just as we were passing a Lawson’s convenience store. We were able to get under cover.

Don Quixote is the largest discount store in Japan. It is loud with announcements and garish music playing. It is crowded but there are deals to be had. We need some dinner and breakfast fixings…we will stock up there and save some money.
