Day 46: Omaha to Audubon
After breakfast at the hotel, we packed up and headed out of town. Although there are bike lanes in downtown Omaha, construction and one way streets created the need for detours. We were encased in fog, and the tops of the buildings were in the clouds. We were on bike paths as we left the city and continued on more as we crossed the beautiful Bob Kerry pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River and entered into Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Heritage Trail in Council Bluffs was adorned in beautiful murals. Trail gap that followed was awful, and should be a priority. We soon entered the rolling Loess Hills with lots of short, steep climbs. Hey, believe it or not, guess what Iowa also has - corn! Lots of corn and soybeans as far as the eyes can see. The humidity continued today, but it was mostly overcast. The terrain remained rolling hills all day, so we had almost 4,000 feet of elevation climb. Unfortunately, we ended up on some very rough gravel county roads with steep inclines and drops that were brutal. We ended the day on the T-Bone rail trail which was a welcome change. Arriving late in camp, we decided not to cook and had dinner at a restaurant across the road.
