Day 40: Bassett to O’Neill
So, a very interesting day , which actually started last night. About 9:20pm, I was preparing for bed and it seemed like a swarm of mosquitoes were suddenly all over my face. I hurried up, and jumped into my tent to escape the menace. Well, the invisible menace continued all night. It felt like little bugs crawling all over my face and itching around the upper torso. I got zero sleep and got up an 3am to take another shower. Unfortunately, it was a temporary relief and irritation continued called ‘formication ‘). I assumed it was a reaction to something, so I took Benadryl and some Advil. Giving up on sleep, I put a few layers on and sat at the picnic table waiting for daylight. Rising soon after, Scott M. told of a similar story and he also got no sleep. Best guess, we think the water at the campsite might be contaminated with pesticide and we had a reaction to it. Since we were awake all night, we also got to enjoy a passing thunderstorm the dropped 2 inches of rain and lots of lightning. Fortunately, we were already setup under a shelter. The day started out overcast and humid and became partly sunny in the afternoon. There were a few breaks along the way and we stopped for lunch at Atkinson. At one point we tried a section of the Cowboy Trail, but it was too soft from the overnight rain. Just prior to lunch, I was actually struggling to stay awake on the bike. So, after lunch we stopped for some ice cream and caught a 20 minute power nap. The nap did the trick and we powered through the last 18 miles to Carney Park campsite in O’Neill. Little did we know, there is a rodeo and concert tonight for summer fest. So much for going to bed early. Dinner was in town - Mexican.
