Day 35: Harrison to Chadron
Ty At 1 am this morning we awoke to irrigation sprinklers showering our tents. They continued throughout the early morning and were still running when we woke up at 5:30 am. Finding 1/2 inch of water in my tent, this was the point that I (Scott G) discovered the rain fly on my tent is no longer water repellent. I’ve contacted the manufacturer to see if a replacement is available and have it shipped to a bike shop in Omaha.
Today was a scorcher… hitting 100F. We started in mixed grass prairie, but along the way Ponderosa pine started to dot the landscape. A rock escarpment called Pine Ridge offered a change in view. We rode through the Smiley Canyon on our way to Ft. Robinson State Park. We stopped to eat lunch and take a tour of the grounds. Interesting history from an Indian fort to horse and dog trading center, WW2 POW camp and ag research station before being retired in the 1960s. We hopped on the nice White River bike trail anmong the cottonwoods into Crawford. With the excessive heat of the day, we felt it prudent to stop for a malt and some cold brews along the way to Chadron. We arrived at our Warmshowers host (Kurt) in the late afternoon and grabbed a quick shower and had a very filling dinner.
Today's ride: 52 miles (84 km)
Total: 1,733 miles (2,789 km)
