Day 33: Casper to Douglas
Welcome to the Great Plains!! Today we started out with a breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon - thanks Loraine. We departed our warmshowers host and made our way out of Casper on a bike path, the only one more than a mile that we have been on in Wyoming.. At the edge of Casper we transitioned to the road and made our way to a beautiful town park in Glenrock for lunch (on another rail trail). The sagebrush gave way to rolling grasslands, and we saw antelope scatter across fields several times. After lunch, we ended up on unpaved road along the river to avoid the highway. It had some serious washboard ruts. At times the jarring and vibration was so bad, it blurred my vision. Back on pavement, we passed Fort Fetterman from the 1880s overlooking the North Platte river. We arrived in Douglas at the Wyoming State Fairgrounds packed for rodeo practice, pitched our tents riverside and headed into town for dinner at the Depot Restaurant (see burger review).
Today's ride: 57 miles (92 km)
Total: 1,601 miles (2,577 km)
