Day 25: Mammoth Hot Springs to Canyon Village
Happy 4th of July! No fire works for us, wouldn’t want to set the national park on fire. Well, it was only a matter of time before my first flat tire. As we were prepping breakfast and breaking camp, I (Scott G.) realized my back tire was flat. No problem, I swapped in a new tube and we headed out of camp. We picked up a lunch to go at the general store and started our climb out of Mammoth. It was 1400 foot climb to the edge of the caldera at Golden Gate Pass, but a very manageable grade. We opened out onto flat meadows and we saw our first buffalo at Swan Lake. An hour down the road, my rear tire is flat again. Fortunately, I had another tube and swapped it out again, this time in the rain, which passed thru quickly. We made our way to Norris Geyser Basin and ate our lunch before setting off to explore. The area is incredible, it’s like being on another planet with the barren landscape, billowing steam vents, water gurgling and spewing from the ground, and various colors of blue, green, red, yellow, and white. We moved on from the basin with a second long 900’ climb to Canyon Village. With a room at the lodge, we showered, ate dinner, did laundry, restocked food supplies, and patched two inner tubes.
Today's ride: 36 miles (58 km)
Total: 1,160 miles (1,867 km)
