Day 23: Pine Creek to Mammoth Hot Springs Campground
After breakfast in camp, we started out on roads across ranchland in Paradise Valley, surrounded 360 by mountains. Crossing the Yellowstone River, we transitioned to a gravel road - the Old Yellowstone Trail. We stopped for lunch under one of the few trees along the trail for a much needed break from the sun and headwind. Two road/trail closures were encountered today and we did see an Osprey nest with Osprey near by and several elk (some in open fields, some in town). Our afternoon beer and fried cheese curd break was at a local restaurant in Gardiner before the big climb into Yellowstone Park. The road into the park was challenging - very steep, twisting turns, no shoulder, lots of traffic, and 1100 feet of elevation. Not enough oxygen up here!!! After about a dozen cardiac/oxygen breaks, we made to the top and into the Mammoth Hot Springs Campgrounds and into Wyoming.
