Wednesday

Another cool night, I slept well. There was a haze in the air from the Canadian wild fires but it didn’t impact us too much. Today’s ride started on the road, went through a few towns and the Bard College campus. Bard has a Frank Gehry building, constructed for performances. The Speigeltent was also up–it’s a sumptuous 1920s theater tent from Belgium. Unfortunately it was locked so we couldn’t get a look inside. Access to these two structures would have been fun.

Our first rest stop was down a hill at the Clermont State Historical Site with views of the Hudson. I was going to show Mark and Pat the Ferncliffe Firetower, but with the wildfire haze it wasn’t worth the mile detour. We rode over the Kingston/Rhineclif Bridge on the pedestrian path, which is safer than the white striped bicycle path. (This bridge desperately needs to be reconfigured for bicyclists’ safety.)

We pedaled through Sojourner Truth State Park, one of NY State’s newest parks and a work in progress with great views of the Hudson. The second rest stop was nearby in the Hudson Brick Yards, a glamping resort on the river.

I deviated from the official path and gave Pat and Marc a brief tour of Kingston, pointing out the Senate House, New York's first capital building and where the state was formed. We also went to Four Corners, the spot where four 18th century houses remain, one on each corner.

The route went up a hill and onto the gravel portion of the EST, the Walkil Valley Rail Trail, over the Rosendale Trestle past the edge of New Paltz and to the Ulster County Fair Grounds, our home for the night. BBQ chicken was the evening's fare. I thought it was pretty good. There was an acoustic duo playing after dinner and a shuttle service to town was provided.
