Day Zero - Mile 0 Marker and National Mall

Today was supposed to be Day 1 of the ride.  Instead, we started the day at Urgent Care having the boo-boo checked out before we head to the wilds of Maryland on the C&O Canal Trail.  Everything was good and now we're good to go tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day and we rode the Rock Creek trail from our Warmshowers to the Mile 0 marker.  Construction on the trail put us a couple of blocks off track but we found Thompson's Boat Center and the marker.

Our bikes at Mile zero sans the panniers.

Thompson 's is the key to finding the marker.  They're at 2902 Virginia Ave NW.  Turn left into their lot and go around the building all the way to the back.  The marker is on a little spit of land right off the Potomac River.  The mulberry tree fruit  is ripening.  Do a little foraging if you are in the area.  At least that's what one local cyclist was doing when we were there.

Thompson's Boat Center. This is what you see when you turn left.

After Mile 0, we continued on Rock Creek Trail past the Kennedy Center and cross the street at the Lincoln Memorial.  There were lots of tour busses and hordes of tourist.  Since we've done DC before, we took some quick photos and headed back to our Warmshowers to get re

The Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument. Zoom in for a peak at the Capitol Building just to the right of the monument.

The Lincoln Memorial. They only light up Abe at night but he's there in the shadows.

I'm surprised but they say we are their first "older" touring couple.  They are very interesting and regaled us with tales from both living and traveling.  Gregory was in international management including working for the government and Janet is a financial law attorney.   We've quickly become friends.

Tomorrow is Day 1.  We're excited to get this journey started and we're happy you've decided to come along.

Today's ride: 16 miles (26 km)
Total: 16 miles (26 km)
