To Melnick

A rather surprising end

Last night's meal was interesting.  We went to the restaurant suggested to get a traditional Czech meal.  First we had soup which was good with noddles and pieces of chicken in it.  Then Ken had duck with stewed cabbage and different dumplings.  It all looked very grey but Ken said both the duck and the cabbage were tasty.  My choice was not as good I had fried cheese with holindaise sauce and dumplings.  I enjoyed the sauce but don't think I will order fried cheese again.

The weather forecast was not good with rain predicted in the morning.   It had rained over night but we were lucky and although the sky was very grey not a drop fell on us.  As we have come to expect here the marking of the track was near perfect.  What is not perfect is that when they tell you in the Czech Republic that a track is unsealed it actually means that it is virtually unridable - we managed to miss most of these bits today preferring to take our chance amongst the traffic.

There were 14 piles of pumpkin presumably for seeds - hops in the background

A highlight was arriving in Roudnice.  We were routed across a bridge and there spread out in front of us was a really pretty town with a great cafe.

It is not only hens and ducks you have to look out for

Back on track we had a lovely ride watching the fishermen and the swans.  There was a bridge over to Melnick we needed to take - it was closed for repairs. However back a little way there was a ferry.  It was not much bigger than a rowing boat but our bikes were loaded on and over we went and up the hill to the town.

This shows the height of various floods. The 2002 one is at the very top the line virtually obscured

No wonder we had so much difficulty with accommodation the place was alive with fun and music.  There is a massive fete on this weekend, side shows are erected and there is every imaginable type of thing  for sale.  There are several competing sound stages and wine and beer is flowing freely.  All this made it very hard to find either the Tourist Information or our overpriced hotel because all signage was obscured by what is going on.  Must have a quick shower then go out and join the fun
