To Kelheim

Another day of idleness

We took tings very slowly as once again we had a very short distance to go and it was beginning to warm up when we left at about 9.30.  The tourists where just beginning to come out and by the time we reached the park beside the river there were lots and lots of people walking, riding and running.  Lots of dogs were getting lessons as they looked adoringly at their owners.  It was in this park that Ken and I lost each other for around an hour about 8 years ago.  It certainly isn't a happy memory.  Ken remembers looking through the bushes to see if I ridden into the Danube and I just remember riding up and down asking people if they had seen him - the answer always just Nein.  Today we just delighted in the park

Just past it Ken was delighted to see one of those enormous Sugar Beet Harvesters at work.  Most of the day was right beside the river and it was lovely with glimpses of pretty little towns on the other side of it.  Bad Abbach was the town of the day for us as it had a great Backerie for coffee and pastries as we relaxed in the sun.  They certainly were doing good business.

Approaching Kelheim

Arriving at Kelheim we went down to the ferry. It is recommended that you take this through the Danube Gorge as the alternative route is too steep.  Once more the low water levels have come into play and there is not enough water for an boats to be taking that route so we will have a challenge tomorrow

We had remembered Kelheim as a sleepy little town but certainly not today.  Beside the river was a huge car boot sale and once through the gate in the city wall it was full of people having some sort of fest.  It seemed to be mainly cake eating rather than beer drinking.   There was a stage with some acts and there were some displays including one by kalkohof where Ken established that Winora are part of the same german ebike manufacturer.  I have a Kalkohof at home and am riding a Winora at the moment.  We explored the Main/Donau Canal at the end of town.
