Day 7– Fillongley Park, Denman Island to Tribune Bay, Hornby Island,
Marilee here.
Another day of beautiful weather and short mileage to accomplish— a perfect, lazy summer bike trip combo. So what better way to start the day than with a second cup of coffee followed by a swim?
Eventually we got around to packing up and heading out, and the ride to the island’s west ferry terminal for the trip to Hornby was very lovely. Rolling hills, winding roads through sun-dappled woods, sea views to the west over rocky points, the smell of sage and hay and blackberries. Really, much too soon we rolled into the ferry terminal, where we lightened our load by stashing all our bags in the waiting room and headed for the southern tip of the island, feeling a bit tippy on the unburdened bikes. We hiked through the woods to a viewpoint over cliffs to a tiny island housing a lighthouse and a look back at the big island.

Back to the ferry terminal in lots of time for another short hop and we were on our fifth island of the trip — Hornby. We chatted to a local on the ride over who had lots of advice on trails to take to avoid hills — advice that we ended up ignoring as Hornby seemed blessedly flat compared to the previous four islands! In no time we were setting up camp in tribune bay campground and setting out for the beach (sensing a theme to this bike trip yet?).
Hornby surprised us by having perhaps the tiniest “town” we’d yet encountered, despite being packed with campers and tourists — but Tom sourced Mexican takeout, which we ate on the beach, admiring a view of a blue cove dotted with white sailboats — Mediterranean vibes! The water was blissfully warm and unbelievably clear.
Today's ride: 22 km (14 miles)
Total: 291 km (181 miles)
