Mexico Beach Day Off

I was up early. Before six . . . but not out of bed until 7:00 or so. My goal was to check out breakfast at Castaways, the only game in town (within walking distance) to get a real breakfast. And they only serve till 10:00 AM (opening at 7:00)! This is a sleepy beach town. Most places close by 9:00 PM, even the one bar I discovered for yesterday’s burger. So I was out the door and seated, perusing the morning menu by 8:00. Not only for today, but for tomorrow as well! Need fuel for the engine after all!

And again it was a chilly morning. 46°F chilly. So I dressed up a bit, knowing it would warm up by the time I returned. I ordered a hearty breakfast and besides the two police officers chowing down, was the only one in the restaurant. Tomorrow (Saturday), they do an all-you-can-eat buffet for $10.00. I ordered à la carte today: three eggs, hash browns, and bacon. With rye toast and coffee, I was all set.

I lingered till 9:30 or so and wandered back to the hotel along the beach, enjoying the sand around my feet. They have nice beaches here — very white, very fine, and firm, not too loose. I then enjoyed some time lounging on the patio — catching up on my podcasts, watching the sun and surf, and watching purple martins play with each other around their houses. Life is blissful.

Later, a quick lunch, more lounging, then dinner at Killer Seafood . . . very good.

A city park on the way to breakfast . . .

. . . but most of the city looks like this, with a sidewalk only on the landside of the highway.

It was a half-mile walk to Castaways, but it was a great breakfast.

And palm trees with lots of seating areas.

Here's a nice view of the beach side of the hotel.

Later in the afternoon, on the way back from lunch (lunch? what's that?), the beach had filled up a little bit more, but it was too windy for me to sit out there. I went back to that nice sitting area and enjoyed my book.

Later, dinner at Killer Seafood, best damn meal. Grilled shrimp, grouper, cobia, hush puppies, and coleslaw. Plus two beers.
