Florida in Retrospect

Florida seemed to have three distinct regions - Key West to Naples (south Florida), then the central section, and finally the north/ the Panhandle. The south was by far the most interesting, with Key West town, the Keys, and the Everglades. Had we started at St Augustine, we would have missed a lot. Central Florida seemed mainly choked with traffic,a situation alleviated only by seeing the orange groves. In the north, the extreme traffic stress went away, except for in towns like Tallahassee, but the landscape was often limited to pine plantations, and poverty became more evident.

Florida Pros

Ocean, palms, gators birds in the south Friendly people Listening to southern accents Cheap motels the north A number of really nice rail trails

Florida Cons

Heavy traffic Expensive everything, in the south Very scarce camping No bicycle culture at all, so erratic or no provision for bikes on the roads No fresh baked goods at all

Today's ride: 66 km (41 miles)
Total: 1,642 km (1,020 miles)
